Knitted Bow - For Hair or as a Brooch

My obsession with bow ties continues... But this time in my hair... This bow is a great stash buster, and a good way to practise working with multiple needles.



You will need:
3 x 4mm dpn
DK yarn
Pinback or hair clip


Cast on 15 stitches.
Knit front and back of each stitch, placing the created stitches on 2 needles. You will end up with 15 stitches on each needle, in 2 parallel rows.






Knit 29 rotations.
Cast off with Kitchener stitch, holding the 2 needles together. This wil make a seamless bow part.


Tie.

Cast on 8 stitches.
Stocking stitch 10 rows, slipping the first stitch of every row.
Cast off.

Crimp the bow in the centre.



Attach the tie around the bow, and stitch up at the back.






Sew on the pinback or clip.

Mini Heart Knitting Pattern - perfect for a brooch

I've been making so many of these! They knit up quick, and the tails stuff the heart. I love making them as a brooch. It's a quick knit, and great scrap buster.

These are about half the size of the heart puff pattern I have posted.






You will need:
4mm dpn
Dk yarn
Safety pin or brooch back

Mini hearts

Cast on 4 stitches on 4mm dpn (2 on each needle)

K1 front and back, K1 front and back, (turn to second needle) K1 front and back, K1 front and back,

Knit 1 rotation

K1 front and back, k2, K1 front and back, (second needle) K1 front and back, k2, K1 front and back.

Knit 1 rotation

K1 front and back, k4, K1 front and back, (second needle) K1 front and back, k4, K1 front and back.

Knit 1 rotation

K1 front and back, k6, K1 front and back, (second needle) K1 front and back, k6, K1 front and back.

Knit 2 rotations

Rounded top:
Knit 2 tog, knit 1, knit 2 tog.
Turn knitting
Slip stitch, k2 tog, psso

Repeat rounded top on the remaining 5 stitches on the needle.

Turn to second needle.

Repeat rounded top on first 5 stitches.

Repeat rounded top on last 5 stitches.

Tuck in tails. Stitch the top section closed. Sew on a safety pin or brooch back on one side.

Knitted Poppy Pattern

I haven't made any knitted flowers in a while. And I do so enjoy them as brooches. This one is a poppy.... Inspired by the WWI show I just finished directing.







Poppy

Petals - make 4
Cast on 4
S1, knit 3
S1, knit 3
S1, knit 1 front and back, knit 1 front and back, knit 1
S1, k1, knit 1 front and back, knit 1 front and back, k1, knit 1
S1, K5, turn knitting, s1, k3, turn knitting, s1, knit to end.
S1, K5, turn knitting, s1, k3, turn knitting, s1, knit to end.
Change to red, k7, turn, s1, k5, turn, s1, knit to end
Knit
Knit
S1, k1, knit one front and back, knit 2, knit one front and back, knit to end
Knit 7, turn, knit 4, turn, knit to end
Knit 8, turn, knit 5, turn, knit to end
Cast off



Sew all 4 together with a black button in the centre.
Attach a pin back to the back.

10 Crafts in 10 Days: Tardis Brooch Pin

For some reason I've decided to complete 10 crafts in 10 days... Alright, mainly as I have a stockpile of things I have wanted to do, and I should get stuck in before heading to China in November. (Yes, China!)

The first one is this Tardis Pin made from felt.




You will need:
Blue felt scraps
Black felt scrap
White felt (or I used ribbon)
Scissors
Fabric glue
Cotton - in blue, white and black
Pin back or safety pin

Cut 2 rectangles to the size you want. Mine were 3cm by 5cm.

Carefully cut out 8 'windows'.


Glue a square of white felt or ribbon behind the top 2, and the first one on the second row.



Glue onto plain blue square. Use one of the cut out windows to make the light on the top.

Cut a strip of black and glue to the top of the box.

Stitch around the outsides. I used a blanket stitch in matching shades around the outsides and insides of the windows.



Stitch on the "Police Box" sign and the pin back.

Ombré Effect Knitted Flower

To make this flower, which I turned into a brooch, you need 2 yarns, similar in colour, but different. I used a red and a red-orange... Which did not photograph very well. Smart move, eh.



You will need
2 yarn colours, scraps.
4mm needles
Pin back
Bead or button

Make 6 petals- keep all on the same needle
Cast on 1 in orange
K1 front and back
Purl
K1 front and back of both stitches
Purl
K1, k1 front and back, k1 front and back, k1
Purl
Kit
Purl
Knit
Purl

Knit 6 petals, slide together, change to red yarn.
Knit
Purl
Knit
P2 tog over whole row
S1, k2 tog, psso over whole row
Cut yarn, slip all stitches onto yarn, pull to tighten.



Darn in the tails.
Stitch into a circle. Use yarn to create pleats in the petals. Add a centre button or bead and a pin back.

Flower Brooch

I just whipped this up at the request of a friend.  Seems like a great way of using up lose buttons and odd bits of yarn.


















Requirements:
Odd bits of dk yarn
4mm needles
Broach pin back
Button

petals threaded

Layered petals

Directions:

Pin back

Make 10 petals in 2 colours (5 in each colour)

Cast on 8
1: knit
2: purl
3: knit
4: purl
5: knit
6: purl
7: knit
8: purl
9: s1, k2tog, k2, k2tog, k1
10: purl
11: s1, k2tog, k2tog, k1
12: purl
13: s1, k2tog, k1
14: s1, p2tog, psso

Thread 5 petals onto a length of yarn. Tighten into a circle. Do the same with the other. Layer them together. Attach to each other. Sew on button in centre. Sew broach back on the reverse.
